At Glance

  • In 2018, 39% of Indonesia's population aged 15 years and over consumed tobacco.
  • In 2019, it is estimated that 19.2% of students aged 13-15 years in Indonesia consumed tobacco.
  • Approximately 57.8% and 66.2% of students are exposed to secondhand smoke at home and in closed public places respectively.
  • Around 76.6% of students who smoke in Indonesia stated that they had bought tobacco in shops, stalls, street vendors or kiosks.

Our Strategy

  • Increasing the knowledge and capacity of young people related to the issue of preventing tobacco consumption.
  • Increased public awareness, especially teachers and parents, regarding Smoke Free Areas.

Why focus on physical activity?

Young people may start smoking for one or several reasons, such as ignorance of the health risks of smoking, peer influence, other social environments such as imitating family members who smoke, or even because of massive promotions by tobacco industries.

Smoking can cause long-term problems for young people, such as the inability to focus at school, non-communicable diseases, misuse of money to buy cigarettes, and difficulties managing anxiety and stress.
