At Glance |
Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the world. In Indonesia, 88 out of 100 people who die are caused by tobacco. Indonesia is a paradise for the tobacco industry, they continue to increase their aggressive marketing and targeting children. We support the World Health Organization's (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), an international agreement that requires its 182 participating countries to comply with tobacco control standards. We encourage national and sub-national policies prohibiting advertising, promotion, sponsorship, both outdoor/indoor/internet cigarettes, selling stick cigarettes, strict rules on electronic cigarettes. |

Why focus on Tobacco Control? |
|
Indonesia has not yet been able to free itself from the evil conspiracy between the tobacco industry and the country's decision-makers. This category of intervention by the tobacco product industry includes seven areas. Among them, the level of participation in policy formulation; activities claimed as corporate social responsibility (CSR), benefits for the tobacco product industry; as well as forms of unnecessary interaction, transparency, conflicts of interest, and precautions. We have been involved in various advocacy efforts promoting the banning of TAPS, increasing tax, SFA, developing political and public support for Indonesia to access the FCTC, and campaigning for tobacco industry accountability targeting children around schools and has been replicated worldwide in 24 countries called "Big Tobacco TinyTarget". In 2019-2020 we succeeded in eliminating Djarum tobacco sponsorship at the national level children's badminton tournament which prompted the enactment of PP 59/2019. Since 2017 we have been working closely with MOWECP to advocate for SFA and TAPS ban as part of the criteria for Child-Friendly Cities and in 2021 Presidential Decree No. 25/2021 concerning Child-Friendly Cities. Since 2019 until now, Lentera Anak has collectively tried to take advocacy steps for revising PP 109 of 2012. We have also built and strengthened youth voices by providing advocacy training to more than 500 young people from all over Indonesia. In 2019 and 2021, together with 107 youth and environmental communities and organizations from 28 cities, we carried out the #Satupuntungsejutamasalah campaign to increase awareness of the dangers of cigarette butts to the environment. In 2022, in collaboration with 7 environmental organizations, we are developing the WNTD campaign to denormalize the tobacco industry by holding the tobacco industry responsible for environmental damage because its products contain hazardous and toxic materials. |
